Hey Guys I have a 88 cherokee 4.0, it gives problems while starting it. If I hold the key all the way, it starts and the engine keeps on running and if I let the key go it stops. I can start it any time but it stops if I let the key go and if I let the key go very slowly it sometimes keeps on running.
I replaced the Ignition switch by the lower steering column and also ordered a Neutral Safety Switch and have read few message boards and came to learn about CPS. I need your help.

Any advice or suggestions!!!!! I WILL GREATLY APPRECIATE

I don't think its the nss, as it would not turn over at all, I had the same thing happen to my 89, when I let the key go, the fuel pump stopped getting power. Check the fuel pump relay and also the start signal wire from the starter relay to the ecu.

I would cancel the nss as they are very expensive, and try this rebuild first, my switch is bad too , no reverse lights but when I get the time , I'm going to follow this link

The nss does not have anything to do with keeping the Jeep running- its only purpose is to prevent starting (cranking) in any drive gear, and provide back-up lights. It does sound like the ignition switch, or the linkage inside the column coming off the switch. But no way is it the nss.

Did this start to happen after you changed the switch?

The switch has small slotted holes where the screws attach. You may need to loosen them and re-align the switch.

When you release the key and the engine stops, do your accessories, like radio, lighter, wipers, etc, still work? Despite having change the switch already, I suspect it may be bad too. Check the key lock cylinder as well.

I tried to open up the key cylinder but found no screws on the coloumn under the steering. Do I need to pull the steering out to get to Key cylinder??? And how can I pull the steering out do i need any special tool.??

You'll need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate remover. Autozone has these for free loan. You should check other local stores.

What about the accessories?

Yes the accessories and all lights work. It starts fine but shuts down when key is released.

Hey Guys I finally nailed the problem. It was a faulty relay(4 relays in row by passenger seat).
Thanks !!!!
