Best I can get with mine is around 18 mpg (US gallons) but when I have my roof pod on it gets down to 16. Does anyone have one of these to compare with? Seems like a guy should get about 30 mpg with a 4 cylinder 5 speed, but maybe the van is too heavy for it to do that well.

I have a '90 2.5 5spd. and I get 28 on trips. 24 in mixed. Run your diag. to see if your fuel is running rich. maybe oxy. sensor. They have a noticable throaty roar under acc at 2k, if not something is wrong.

I guess if there wa a problem I'd get a light if something was wrong. Don't feel like paying $40 to put it on the diag. Motor starts and runs fine and you wouldn't think it would if something was wrong. Also, are there 2 Oxygen sensors on this car? Where are they?

you can use the 5 on method to get fault code readings. first with parking brake applied, egine running and warmed up, cycle shift thru all positions ending at park. shut engine off. without starting engine, turn the ignition key on-off-on-off-on-off-on and then watch the check engine light counting its flashes, writing them down. you will get a 12 first unless your distributor ref signal is bad in which case you will get an 11. a 21 means oxy sensor is not detecting rich or lean on 89 2.5 L. i'm sure its same on yours. i believe there is only one oxy sensor. it's connector is near the engine ground strap at the end of the intake manifold. if you had a lean fuel condition you would get a 51 fault code and rich would give a 52. it's been a while since i did this so please excuse errors.

With mine being a standard, how do I do the shift sequence? Are you saying that if I get a 21 it's a bad sensor?

I tried this and I'll tell you what happened. Don't understand how it works though. Turning the key off and on 3 times, and then on made the engine light come on for about 2 seconds, then it flashed once then stayed off for a bit, then 2 times, stayed of for a bit, then 5 times, then a wait, then once, then a wait, then 5 times twice with a wait in between. Then it stayed off. Can anyone tell me what this means? Where do you find these fault codes, anyway? Thanks.

Ok, so I've figured out the codes and found a list of them. Going to change the sensor tomorrow. In my research on the web I found an article saying that the O2 sensor can make a difference of 10 mpg, and when I talked to the local NAPA dealer he said he knew a guy that couldn't keep gas in his rig because of it. I know when I had it idling for a long time there was always a big sooty pool of liquid under the exhaust. Funny that it could be that far out and still run so good.

Just an update. I changed both the O2 sensor and the MAP sensor and got 20 mpg instead of 16. This was driving at about 75 to 80 and with a giant roof pod on, so I'm expecting to get a lot better driving at 65. Should make a big difference.
