Still overheating

hmmm.... my 91 240 is overheating. Origionally it had a cracked radiator, So I replaced that, and it was still getting hot, so I replaced the thermostat. Now, it is still overheating, and I have no clue what it could be.

I am getting frustrated, as stated in previous post, the car needed a new relay for the starter, so I changed that (after the starter of course  ) SO it sat there for about a month and a half, and was started probably 2 times in between. And after getting it running again, it started overheating, but there was like a 3 inch crack in the radiator, and that would explain that. So now I have changed the radiator and the thermostat. The new radiator is a little bit bigger then the origional, I hape they did not give me the one for the automatic. But even so, I don't think it would get hot this fast.

So I warm up the car, and everything looks good. I drive like 5 blocks away, and the temp starts creeping up (still!!!) so i turn around and go home, the temperature has never gone above two ticks above the normal spot, and before this problem, it has NEVER gone past the normal position. Well, thanks for your help.

first, where did get the replacement thermostat...I hope not autozone

not to make you sound ingnorant but you did mix water into the antifreeze right (or buy premixed)? If yes, try a higher water/coolant mix, 70/30 maybe.

are you sure there is enough coolant in the radiator and that there is no air pockets in the system. to clear airpockets remove the cap, start the engine (make sure engine is cold before you start it otherwise you'll have fluid all over your engine bay) and add coolant as needed. the bubbles will float up and out the radiator. you may need to tap it ocasionally to help them raise.

thermostat's from autozone don't have a bleeder hole in them. you need an OEM one.

you said after you replaced radiator it was running hot. was the gauge saying it was overheating, or do you have a temp gauge? radiators get VERY hot normally. if it wasn't you may have installed the thermostat wrong (or gotten it from autozone as mentioned above).

the only other things it could be are your fans or you didn't bleed the coolant system correctly.

Yeah, I did start it and add more coolant, and it is a 50/50 mix, I did not "tap" the radiator. I will add some more when it cools off, but I doubt this is the problem, because even with pure water it would take more then 5 minutes of driving before the car would overheat, or at least in the past for me this has been true.

thermostat was purchased at Napa btw.

I'll check the fan clutch also, but... still, all the things I can think of checking make the car get hot slowly, not suddenly, like what is happening.

Err... waterpump maybe? (don't really know what it does, but if it does what it sounds like....)

I did not bleed the system that well, but the thermostat did have a bleeder hole. Will the system bleed itself out? or do I need to use the small black screws?

Guess I'll just pull the new thermostat out altogether, and see what happens. And use the cool cardboard in the fan trick to check the clutch ;) Any other ideas?

Thanks again.
