2000 K2500(6.5 Turbo Diesel) Transmission ?

The automatic transmission in my 2000 K2500 (6.5 turbo diesel) was vibrating badly. I thought it was a tire balance problem until after coming back from a 450 mile trip, it suddenly smoothed out, made some real bad noises and then quit! Of course we were stranded about 50 miles from home but I have a very resourceful wife. We got it onto our car trailer and towed it behind her Yukon.
Anybody have a good source for new trannies? I know the shipping will kill us so local is best.
I'm thinking about replacing myself but if it's too much work, I'll need the name of a reliable transmission shop in western suburbs of Chicago.
Any Ideas????

Thanks

Are you sure it is the trans, I am not doubting you , it is just that i have never heard of a trans that vibrated before although i have heard of gears in the rearend that cause vibration. Easy way to tell is put it in gear and look under the truck to see if the driveshaft is turning. I had a 68 dart once that i tried doing a burnout with and thought i blew the trans but when i looked to see if there was a pile of parts under the car , the driveshaft was still turning. But i could be wrong, like i said i am not doubting you, just never heard or expierenced an auto trans that vibrated
