(HELP) Hard Shifting When Going From Park To Dirve And During Slow Starts

Hi Gang,

I'm going to start from the beginning here and hopefully you might be able to give some idea of what the problem could be.

Orignally I was having problems with the A/C and the Coolant was leaking so I brought it in for repairs and made the necessary repairs and they also changed the Drive belt b/c it needed replacing which I was aware of. So after I got it back I took it for a long ride to make sure that the A/C was working and that the car wasn't over heating and it seemed fine. So I stopped at the light and when the light turned green I slowly accelerated and then the gear shifted pretty hard and started to get worse as I drove.

So I went home and put the car in park to pick up the mail. Then I went from park to drive and then the car did a hard shift it also happens when you take it from park to reverse as well (not to mention the engine light went on afterwards). I had the motor mount replaced thinking that was the issue and it would fix the problem but I still have the problems. Mind you that this problem didn't start until after I got the car back from the shop.

Do you think it might be a sensor problem or the throttle plate not aligned right?

This is as much detail I can give you and I hope that you might be able to help me out and give me a few ideas as to what could be the problem.

I'm going to say that something is wrong in your wiring somewhere. Check your MAF sensor wiring. If you have a volt meter check all of them. Then after that I would check the wiring harness going into the transmission. It's located right behind the fan on the drivers side. Make sure its plugged in good.

If possible go to Autozone and get them to read the code for you. They do it for free.

If the MAF sensor were out, wouldn't the Service Engine soon light come?

Hey there, I just had my transmission replaced at 90,000kms and after having it in the shop, i have been noticing the exact same problems as you mentioned above. My guess is that the engine/tranny are mis-aligned. I hope its not the computer because that could cause damage. Anyone else know whats going on here?? thanks

I just came in from the cold, fixing the same problem you guys are talking about. My 3.4L V6 01 Alero was hard shifting with the Service Engine light on. The Diagnostic Trouble Code was P0113: Intake Air Temperature Circut, High Input. Hoping for the easy fix I bought and installed a new IAT sensor (AKA: Air Charge Sensor) at AutoZone for $13.99, but it didn't help anything.

The problem was the wiring leading to the sensor had broken. The IAT sensor shares the same 5V reference voltage with the Coolant Sensor and the Throttle Position Sensor. When the wire broke at the IAT Sensor, the TPS signal got messed up telling the computer to up the transmission pressure to "protect" the transmission. (Even though it felt like it was destroying the transmission)

The solution to the problem was to order a new IAT Sensor connector pigtail, GM Part # 12102620/ AC Delco Part #PT307/ PICO Part # 5616. I found mine at bmotorsports.com for under $8.00 after shipping. Stagger your cuts on the pigtail wires, heat shrink both butt connectors, and re-apply some electrical tape and you'll be back to smooth shifting in no-time!
