What are the point of aftermarket cam gears and pulley kits?

well usually aftermarket came gears are adjustable so timing can be adjusted without having to go whole teeth. There is sort of an outer part of the gear (with the teeth) which can be adjusted without moving the inner portion of the gear which is directly bolted to cam(s). Aftermarket crank pulleys sometimes change the ratio of pulley to pulley (such as an alternator), the gearing is in theory changed so it could possibly take less power to run the alternator, etc. Yet you would be turning the alternator slower decreasing output.

Aftermarket cam gears are adjustable so you can fine tune the cams. In doing so you can make the cams for the intake AND exhaust (on DOHC motors) stay open longer so there's more effiiency which creates more power. But going too far can have poor idling problems.

Aftermarket pulleys help to "lighten the load" on the engine to create more power. The alternator, AC and power steering pump pulleys cause parasitic drag on the engine. Making them lighter and a bit larger in diameter helps to free up power.

the cam gear adjustment has nothing to to w/ the length the valves stay open. it only adjusts when they open and subsequently close. the duration of the valves being open is governed by the cam lobe. a wider cam lobe will allow the valves to stay open longer.

sorry, just trying to make sure they understand wut's going on
