clutch or tranny ??

ok, here's what I have .... when I start off in 1st it's real jumpy/jerky unless i start at a low rpm and dont let off the clutch so fast. secondly, when driving along in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th i can hear a rubbing/scratching sound, kinda like the clutch plates, or tranny. It's not the engine because when driving along and hearing that scratching sound and push in my clutch the sound goes away.

what do you think, clutch or tranny? if its the clutch, has anyone put one in? or just take it to the shop.

oh yea, if it's my clutch (which I wanted to replace anyways), what would be a good replacement?

It could be both, clutch worn & a bad input shaft bearing(not a throwout bearing) flywheel could also be damaged.

Clutch replacement on a civic is pretty easy compared to most other cars. If your attempting it yourself make sure to have all the parts & proper tools before doing the job. Also a factory repair manual will walk you through with pictures www.helminc.com The trans must be removed and if your not comfortable doing that let someone else do it.

ACT or Exedy clutches are great, just don't overkill it with a race clutch or stage 3 unless you absolutely need it. The harder a clutch grabs the faster it wears. I love these kids that bring their cars into the shop with race clutches on a basically stock car. Damn thing don't last for shit on the street but they think it's gonna make their cars faster, haha.

I have an ACT Stage 2 clutch on my d16z6 and it gras really well ut I agree that you don't need anything more than an OEM one unless you are working with some serious added power or you will e back at the shop getting another one put in before you know it. and no you shouldnt try putting a new one in or trouleshooting on youre own have it done at a shop, maybe watch in o n a few before trying to do it on youre own

ok, thanks for the info. I had it looked at yesterday and they told me it was the throwout bearing, plus with my milage (140K) that my clutch is probably worn too. they didn't open it up yet but they've heard this noise before and its a common fix. I ordered a Exedy Pro Street Clutch Kit Flywheel Combo, better than stock but not as extreme as a race clutch. can't wait to get it next week and get it installed.

well, if its a input shaft bearing like you're thinking is there one of them in Exedy's clutch kits?

No, and it's not easily replaced like a throwout bearing. The trans must be taken apart to get at the bearing. Input shaft bearing are what take all the strain from hard driving.

#67 is the bearing - located bottom left hand corner 2nd indicator from the word replace.

It is definitely the input shaft bearing. I had the same noise in my 92 vx. as soon as i changed it the sound went away and the jump in first went away. Is the tranny leaking at all? If you replace the bearing i would replace the front seal bc mine leaked as soon as i got it back together

Well I installed a Exedy pro-street clutch kit w/ flywheel. Man, it grabs a lot better and much tighter. I still got the noise when I accelerate tho .... I'm taking it to a tranny shop soon so they can tell my its the input shaft bearing, according to your posts

. If the bearing is worn/bad will there be any other damage to the gears?

The only damage to the gears will be from the driver.

unless it remains unfixed long enough.. well thats what they told me when i got my input shaft bearing replaced, they said if i let if stay that way long enough the bearings will end up going around in my tranny and messing the gears up.. it was i think a 700 dollar fix for the bearing

$700, lol how many jars of vasoline did that come with? You can get a used or rebuilt trans(warranty) for under $300 - not including labor.

My tranny's input shaft bearing went a few months ago...it was fun. That growling noise is MaD JdM TiTE Yo!!

Then my clutch exploded on a nice hard 3 to 4th at about 105 MPH shift on Interstate 275.

Try driving with a loud, bad ISB, and no clutch! I had to restart the car if I came to a stop, and use the starter to get me going, and I had to use clutchless shifting...

With an ACT + new Si tranny + install, I was set back $700.

That was in the fall.... now my 3 and 4 sync are going...Don't slam gears in SOHC VTEC's at 8500 RPM! And don't drop to 2nd at 60 MPH, and don't drop to 3rd at 90.

Infact, don't drive your SOHC hard, the motor will last, as mine has withstood up to 9000, but the trans will die in a heratbeat...

So where did you find a SI tranny for a 94 d16z6? if 700 can cover a new SI tranny w/install then i'm definately gonna go that route.

It was $700 with trans/clutch/install. So that will be a little less.

You don't want to. There is no key differences, at least where it matters. The ratio of 5th is shorter than EX tranny. That means that your acceleration will be the same, but you get to use MORE gas on the freeway cause your engine is at higher RPM at the same speed. I only got Si because it's whay they had.

Anyway- it was a speed shop, in Fairfeild Ohio. Total Preformance Racing. May be a little far from you.
