No Spark

I have a 1991 passat, just did the heater core...what a job....
I now find that I get absolutely no spark at the wires or coil??
Any suggestions on test methods to find the problem?

From what I have read in Bentley there are some tests at the distributor that I will try, but I was wondering if there may be certain connectors in the wiring harness in the dash that would affect this.

The thing I don't understand is that with the wiring harness pulled out and only the heater hooked up (to test the system before I put the dash back together) the car started and ran no problem. Once the dash went back together and all wiring plugged back in...no spark???

Any help would be much appreciated.

Done

Yes, I have checked the hall sender, the power distributor at the coil, I have checked that the hall sender activates when grounded and the two pins of the voltmeter are connected to the coil posts...at a loss. I have attempted all of the checks in the bentley manual and they all come back functioning properly...hmmm...I guess it is time to suck it up and take it to the shop.

BRUTAL....and still lost

Ok, so here goes the saga. I have now found one of VW's worst designs, the hall sender that you must change the freaking distributor to replace. With that done...still no spark. Replaced coil....tried another computer...I am starting to wonder about the intelligence of germans....being me...because I am so lost on this one...if anyone would give me a hand...it would be so appreciated. I think the garage is calling my name...but damn am I a stubborn ass.

Please see my post at http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=323582 under the title 91 passat stalls...help.

Sounds like we have similar issues, only yours is more or less permanent at this time, and mine is intermittent.

Have you checked all of the grounds?
You have 12V at the coil? Right?
Considered ignition switch?

I too have done my heater core (couple years ago) and yes it is a bitch. I think that at the factory, they start with the heater core, and build all the rest of the car around it. There are a ton of electrical connections in the process that could have gotten stressed/not quite re-connected. So check all of your connections near the fuse panel and sttering column just to make sure that you don't have something loose or disconnected. And don't forget to check grounds.
Please keep everyone posted on what you find, as it may help us all with similar "missing spark" problems.
