I just recently purchased a 2000 Sunfire for cheap transportation! There is a small oil leak on the back of the engine...probably a seal? Someone told me that newer cars do not have timing belts? Is this true? The car has 100+ thousand miles and thought maybe the timing belt should be changed, along with replacement of the oil seal.
Thanks....What would cause the Check Engine Light to come on, and stay on? There does not appear to be any engine problems and the car is running fine.
there is something that threw a code, take the car to Autozone or the like if in Canada. they usually get the codes for free. it's most likely something minor, like a burnt out bulb or a sensor thats just out of spec.
timing chain, not belt. for both the 2.4L and the 2.2L
I believe the same for the ECO as well. Not as familiar with that engine yet.
i have a 2000 sunfire and my check engine light has been on for like 3 months now i had it checked out and the shop said it was like i had drove my car with out a gas cap and air got in it so that caused the light to come on and that was it he turned it off and it just came back in a week and its still the same problem lol so dont be to worried!!
Have auto zone or somthing tell you what the code reads it is possible that it is your O2 sensor I have a 2000 and it went bad and have had to problems with how the car was running. i replaced and cleared the code and havent had a light since.

FYI, it is illegal for a check engine light to be erased without the problem being fixed. An Autozone employee did it once, store was fined $5000, and everyone working that shift was fired...

Hm, wasn't aware of that. I wonder who ratted out that particular employee..
