If it is in the same condition as your T/A and an even trade I think I might do it. The Monte Carlos are fun too and Ive seen some pretty cool ones out there. Does the Monte Carlo have t-tops? If not, then I don't know though...it's kind of nice to be able to pop off the t-tops and cruise in the open air on a nice day.

Re: 87 ttop monte carlo ss or 82 ttop ta
Take the monte. Its a full framer thats cheap to flow out,and the resale of those things are going out of control. My boss has one for sale for 6 grand right now.Its in pretty good shape.Make sure you look at the title, and make certain its not another SS clone tho.If you see a clear title to the 87ss monte,i say go for it.Just remember its heavier and lacks the aerodymamics and steering capabilities your T/A has.Less overall performance, but more resell value .And with a full frame you can put a motor in it that you cant put in a Trans am without going to a full custom tube frame/sub system. They both have wishy washy whimpy 4 link setups. But performance trailing arms and adjustable control arms fix that...

They are not that much heavier, my car is 3,567 with me in it and that is with 15 gallons of ice water in the back for the intercooler. Also as far as handeling. Remember, they did use that same car and suspension (well 4 link suspension) in nascar, you can get them to turn. The weak spots on any G-body car are the trannies (assuming that it is still a 200-R4.) and the rearends. The GNs where the only ones that came with the good ten bolt (8.5 inch ring gear as opposed to the 7.5 inch ring gear) One thing you might want to look into if you get the car is body braces. They install behind your seats in the trunk area. G-bodies have a problem with twisting and warping body metal right above the rear part of the doors ( check out the pic, I know it is not a montie but they both share the same flaws in body work)
The braces will take car of that

Re: 87 ttop monte carlo ss or 82 ttop ta
Mine only weighs 3100 lbs.I estimate this by its original body weight wich is 1535 kg / 3384 lbs.Have in mind a V8/350 trans setup is heavier than your v-6 (crate weight).Plus i subtract weight for features that have been removed for added weight loss.Im about seventy pounds heavier due to speakers and amps than I should be.If i pull the t-tops and back glass out of it and weigh it,i wonder what weight it would be then.
I may have lost more weight than i have verified to you.The exhaust lost 50 pounds easy. The AC,and external plastic trim,as well as the emissions/engine electrical (non critical)and any contained features of,have been done away with.I am replacing the passenger side firewall here pretty soon to one of a 84 camero wich had no ac option.Thats probably good for a few pounds.Heck i might even get rid of the heater assy.too.
Other specs for my car original can be found at http://www.supercars.net/cars/1982@$Pontiac@$Firebird%20Trans%20Am.html

Re: 87 ttop monte carlo ss or 82 ttop ta
Cars with T-tops are incapable of cracking in the Place you have revealed, unless you shatter a t-top.Thats why i am running with my 82'T/A,instead of the others (two 87 Firebirds, and a 83 Camero) i have owned. They all had the cracking your talking about. So i stripped all of them to the frame, saving or selling all parts, and sold the remains (and titles)to junk yards.

I did not see the t-top, in that case the same problem will happen further back.My uncles 87 GN did it and it was a T-top car.
My car is a pig I still have AC and noting strippedin the thing and I just added the 15 gallon icewater resivor.

Re: 87 ttop monte carlo ss or 82 ttop ta
tx and good luck.that monte was a good investment.as for your t/a,if it keeps spinning bearings like that,i would either question sombodys(your) leadfoot,or the quality of the bearings, main caps,or the machining involved.Perhaps sombodys eyes were a little off when they measured it for proper bearings
