89 Civic Trailer Hitch?

Hi folks,
I'm new to the forum and have a quick question. Have any of you installed a trailer hitch on your Civic? If so, which one do you have, how difficult was it to install and does it work well? I realize the Civic is not a "hauling" vehicle, but I need to trailer my dirt bike. I figure the bike/trailer combination won't weigh more than 500 pounds. Thanks for any information you can give.

I saw one on E-bay a few days ago.

I don't know what other people on here would say, but I don’t think are cars were ever really Designed to pull a hitch, so that’s something I would never have my car do. might also depend on how much HP/torque your car is puttin out. might be a strain on our little cars unless you got the power to do it

Re: 89 Civic Trailer Hitch?

Hmmm...Id highly reccomend against that. Our cars in no way were made to tow even the littlest of trailers. Thats why its hard to find any tow hitch made for them.

If i remember correctly our cars cant pull no more than 900lbs. That would have to include, you, your stuff, gas, 500lb, trailer, big heavy tow hitch, and any other crap in your car.--- I wouldnt even try risking breaking something or burning up brake pads and warping rotors. And if you idid have to do this, Id say def. keep it under 45mph. Plus you will have a serious loss in gas mileage!

Re: 89 Civic Trailer Hitch?

that prelude is sweet looking. I never realized they made them so long ago.

...as for hitching a civic. I'm pretty sure I've seen them pulling seados or whatever with the boot sagging. Get more hp/tq then think on it...

Re: 89 Civic Trailer Hitch?

ya, but towing a dirt bike (or other bike) is a lot different than towing a car.

Re: 89 Civic Trailer Hitch?

anything can tow if the correct precautions are taken.

do a thourough inspection of all components, brakes (flush fluid if more than 2 years old), tranny, engine, suspension, etc. If you have an auto, flush the fluid and put in a temp gague. if a manual, change the fluid and make sure the clutch is adjusted. Drive slower and more carefully, to avoid sudden stops. Also weight the trailer carefully for best performance.

Good luck!

Re: 89 Civic Trailer Hitch?

Hidden Hitches makes a Class I trailer hitch, and I know I've seen guys running little Harbor Freight trailers behind their Civics, Miatas and Integras.

Realize that a Civic is able to pull a total of 4 people (including the driver). So figure each person is 150-200lbs that's 600-800lbs.

Yeah but a 4th gen civic. Meant to be light for a reason! Besides integras 90+ have a lot more hp/tq. than any other civic <91! I still reccomend against it unless your towing it up the street!
