Trashed rearend and transmission...

I have a 96 2500 series w/4L60 transmission and 9.5 in. rearend. I was going around a corner, normal speed, and a grinding sound started. Truck started hesitating and sounded like I had dropped my exhaust on the pavement. Had it flatbedded to a shop where the rearend was looked at- one of the gears in the carrier assembly cracked in several places and chipped some teeth-this gear is pretty fine toothed. $1200 dollars later the guy at the shop called me after I was coming to pick it up and told me a sound was coming from the trasmission-sounds like metal against metal like when your brakes are really really bad!

When your inside the truck the sound sounds like it is coming from the rearend, rear brake area. But when you stand outside and the truck is driven past you, you can definitely tell it is coming from the tranny...

How can I lose the rearend and tranny at the same time? The shop seems honest and said he has never seen something like this before. Anyone hear of losing both at the same time?
