OK, here is the problem here.

My jeep starts up fine, when I give it any gas it sputters...Basically it wont tach up. I have checked the vacuume lines, all OK. I have checked the fuel pump/filter, all OK.

I tried to rotate the distrobuter to advance the timing, but the distrobutor doesnt seem to turn, is anyone sure if you can turn the distrobutor on a 1989 4.0?

The only things that I have done recently are replacing the CPS (crank position sensor).

Has anyone had problems like this after changing the CPS?

The thing that gets me, is that the jeep ran fine for a week or so after replacing CPS...

PLEASE HELP!!

Thanks to all-
Alex

OK,
to everyone out there....

noticed that the aftermarket CPS was longer (almost 2X)...

wire was laying across the headers...yea, not a good thing...it burnt through, and shortered out the wire...caused the symptoms on my last post...

hope my idiocy and confusion can maybe help someone in the future...

most likely the egr valve is opening before it should. Some times the vacum amplifier, the black plastic piece before the egr valve will not bleed off, or the egr valve solaniond is faulty, if you don't have vacum gauges and pump just try unplugging the egr valve vacaum liine and plug it.

Thanks for the feedback Alex. I've done some pretty dumb things myself working on my XJ.

BTW: The timing is not adjustable. It's controlled by the 'puter.

saudade, I really haven't had this problem with my XJ, but here are some things to check out that might contribute to your problem, if the idle seems a little off, check for a high pitched whistle(cracked vaccum line, line not connected) or you air filter, fuel filter " if old do change!!!!!!", then check you fuel pump p.s.i.

saudade, one more thing I don't think it will be the crank shaft position sensor due to if it's defective the engine want start, but if it is coated with oil it will cause the engine to rotate more before starting. It doesn't seem to get enough gas!
