Question auto or manual?

I'm looking at buying a 2002 camaro before GM stops making them at the end of this year.... i might be able to get a program car way cheaper than the msrp, but it's an automatic. will i notice any major power difference? will it be harder to upgrade? and if i end up with the v6, are there any decent upgrades available?
