1998 4x4 Transmission fluid/filter change?

A buddy of mine just bought one of these. By looking at the Trans. oil, it looks like it is due a change. I suggested we change the filter also. From first glance, it seems the pan drops right down with no problem. I have done this kind of job before on vehciles. Does anyone know why I would not want to tackle this myself in my garage? Are there any problems or headaches that I don't want to face?

I've seen on here where someone said to go to the dealer and get the trans filter and get a rubber pan gasket. Any comments on that?

Yip, get AC Delco parts only.

One thing is, when you drop the pan and filter, you don't get all the fluid that is in torque convertor which in some cases could be up to 50% of the total fluid volume.

You need to flush the system before you change the filter so that the whole transmission gets new fluid.

Go to a shop were they do BG services it will remove close too 90 to 100% of the fulid instead of a drain and fill because it only removes about 30 to 45% of the fulid and converter is still full!
Trust me 10 year Mech.

Yes, and after that, then go home and swap in a new tranny filter and replace the fluid lost through dropping the pan.

This way you will have complete new fluid and a new filter.
