2001 alero transmission

hello all,

my 2001 olds alero has 57,012 miles on it.
after take off, if i am at about 45mph and i slowly accelerate to 60mph, there is a fluxuation in my rpms, (like i am playin with the pedal, but gently) is there something i dont know? i changed the transmission fluid at 50,000 miles and that had started at about 48,800. so i thought it need changing (accordeing to book every 50,000). i also had my mechanic check the fluid level and they say it is at correct level

can anyone give me some advise on what i may do to fix this?

or possibly what to do to stop this.

and it does not do it if i rapid accel!

I too have run into this very same problem. I have an 01 Alero with a 3.4 liter engine & automatic trans. It now has about 60,000 miles and this problem seems to have gradually snuck up on me over the past week.

At first I thought it was just bumpy roads because the shudder was so slight but now it occurs more frequently and is very appearant.

Between 40-50 mph during a light acceleration there is a shudder/surge that occurs. The tachometer bounces about during this time. This only seems to occur during light acceleration. If I do a hard acceleration I do not see it.

Not sure if it's the tranny or the engine. No Check Engine light has been indicated.

Could be tranny, but 2 biggies to check, from what you guys are describing would be:

clogged cat converter
and lose ignition wires.

I've had loose ignition wires cause fluxuation in RPM's on my grand am at higher speeds. I just pushed the wire boots down really hard when I got home, and the problem was solved.

If the cat was clogged would there be a Service Engine Soon light?

Per some recommendations I saw on a similar issues posted in the Malibu Forum, I changed the air filter (which was dirty but not clogged) and added some Fuel Injection Treatment to the gas (used the Valvoline 12,000 mile formula). The next day the problem was almost un-noticeable. I think this may be a fuel related problem. Per the other recommendations, I'm going to have the fuel filter replaced and then have the fuel injection system purged.

I would also look at getting the fuel induction service done at a GM dealer. This service includes a filter change as well as getting the injectors cleaned and the throttle body serviced. It doesn't state anywhere in the manual that this is necessary, but I had it done on my Malibu at about 60K miles, and I noticed a difference in fuel consumption and saw a smoother idle.

One of the problems that I have run into on most GM vehicles are the Rochester injectors. They are notorious for leaking. At 20,000 miles I replaced the intake manifold gasket due to a leak and rough idle and noticed drip marks on the intake ports. The only solution to this problem is to have them rebuilt and updated. As it turns out, this also causes rough idle and hard starting problems. There are many TSB's on these cars so if it might help try to check the TSB's or have a qualified mechanic take a look.

I have ran into this exact same problem with my 2000 Alero GL3. 3.4 liter. If one of you who had this problem eventually got it solved I would love to hear the solution. I just hate taking the car to a mechanic and saying blindly fix the problem and $K's later maybe it will be fixed

Follow-up.

Replaced the fuel filter and the problem went away immediately.

My guess is, I may have sucked some sediment in the tank or something into when I ran the tank almost dry and plugged the filter.

I bought the FRAM fuel filter, but the direction of flow was in the opposite direction in comparision to that of the AC Delco which was in the car. But the mechanic still installed it, and the car runs very good. Will this be a problem?

I would guess that the filter you installed was stamped wrong at the factory - it's impossible to put the filter in backwards (unless you use a lot of spit, baling wire and rubber hose).

I am still having problems with the RPM stutterings. My cruise control turns itself off and I am still getting a gas mileage of 20. Has anyone else had the same problems?

Ok I like everybody else tried everything listed to solve this problem and almost a grand later my mechanic, noting problems with over oiled K&N Air Filters and throttle by wire, suggested cleaning the Mass Air Flow Sensor, and $85 later the problem was fixed. No more surging. Turns out that an over oiled Air Filter causes small amounts of oil to mix with the incoming air which then gets deposited on the Air Flow Sensor which was giving incorrect readings. Cleaned it off and the problem went away immediatly. Have been driving for 2 months with no reoccurance. So if you are having this problem and have a K&N air filter it is an easy thing to try and fixed my problem.
