You'd think a shop would want the cash!
I just called around a few places to schedule an appointment to have my Taco regeared and have the tires put on. Three places said they wouldnt do the work if they don't aquire the parts themselves. One guy was like, I gotta make a living, LIKE THE LABOR ITSELF ISNT ENOUGH! Finally a shop said they'd do it all for $350 with my self bought Yukon gears. damnit!

They make alot of money on parts. They buy wholesale and sell for too much!! Try to entice the mechanic with a six pack.

I ordered the 8.4" 4.88 rear gears for non elec locking tacomas from MarlinCrawler.com. Stepping it up from the stock 4.10. They are made by Yukon and i think it ran me right about $200. They are a great company to deal with. I called them on the phone and the order was perfect, quick shipping too.

I don't think they guy i talked to makes alot on parts. I mean, when he did my lift, he charged book value from their dealer catalogs. But then again, he probly pays alot less than what is advertised, bastard. He did a good job on my lift, but the dude is a total A$$. Don't see myself doing too much business with him in the future.

For the gears and labor, yeah, about $550. Yeah, 35"s and I have a 6" lift. 3" suspension and 3" body.

Re: You'd think a shop would want the cash!
It may sound silly, but there's a very good reason the other shops wouldn't touch this. Without a means of tracing the quality of the gears, they're setting themselves up for big trouble. When they buy the parts, they're able to fall back on their suppliers (or the manufacturer if a warehouse/wholesaler isn't involved) if you come back a few weeks later with a blown differential.
Great to hear that you got the job done, though. Those are gorgeous rims and monster tires!
Take care,
Jerry

Yeah I'll have pics. They're going on Monday actually now. Re-gearing, tires on, rotors on and break lines on all for $550 I should have pics come late Monday or on Tuesday.
