it shoves compressed air into your motor, basically.

n2o all that does is give your engine more air, the o in n20 gives it more oxygen and more oxygen mena more hp

nitrous is colder and more dense than air

Re: what exactly does a turbo do?

a turbo takes the air coming from your exhaust....speeds it up, cools it down...then puts it back into your motor, motor air....more power!

ummmmm. NO There are two different sides to a turbo. One is the turbine side (exhaust housing) and the other is the compressor side (air side.) When exhaust gasses pass though the turbine side, the exhaust pressure and heat spin the impeller. The impeller is connected to a shaft which is connected to a compressor wheel. As the wheel spins, the small part of the compressor whell (the inducer) draws air into the compressor housing. Then the bigger part of the compressor wheel (exducer) flings the air agenst the compressor housing, as it is shoved agenst the housing, the air charge is compressed. Now instead of having lets say 300 CFM of NA air, you have 300 CFM of more dense compressed air that will support more fuel. This will increase your volumetric effenicy well over 100 percent. Anyway, usually after the compression part the air is reall hot, not as dense, so it will usually go though an intercooler to cool the air temp down. Here is a picture to kind of help

Re: what exactly does a turbo do?

Ladies and Gentlemen.

Excellent answer Hypsi87, nice to know others that know their way around an engine.

Civickiller, Greenblur93 I'm with ya guys.

MexSiR, great recomendation. That's one of the best sites on the web.

Illport you're smokin' crack. If you dont know the answer dont go around spreadin lies.

The short answers.
A turbocharger is a device that uses the heat and inertia of spent combustion gases to compress and force fresh air into an engine.
Nitrous is a chemical oxidizer whose benefits lie in it's ability to deliver oxygen to an engine efficiently and quickly.

Just like how the "LS/VTEC doesn't work because of it's R/S ratio" and the "LS tranny ROCKS for boost cause the gears are longer" shit started.

OMFG I can't believe he said that! Shit, might as well connect your header pipe directly through an intercooler to your thottle body if you believe that load of crap!

But yes, "How Stuff Works" is a wonderful friend!
