I had the same problem with my 88 Astro. I couldn't find any info on how to fix it or figure it out myself. So I went to the junk yard and got a non-tilt steering column and installed it. It works fine, of course I got the steering column from another 88 Astro at the junk yard. Only cost me $35 and an hours worth of work.

its not an easy job. but you will need steering wheel puller. if it has air bag you might not want to do it the clock spring has to be int he right place.but if its not air bag i will be able to walk you though it i dont want air bag to deploy on you if it has air bag its a little more tricky.Let me know if i can figure out how i got here.God bless.

I have this same problem, would like to swap steering columns, but can't readily see how to remove the column from the vehicle. Have disconnected switches, removed nuts that hold the column collar onto the bottom of the dash, but it still isn't loose. Do you remember the steps to removing this thing? Would appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks. Grampatom
