I think he replaced the tranny, the battery boiled, replaced battery, now it won't start, if it the one I'm thinking of.

IF it doesn't do anything, check the neutral safety switch, as GM made subtle changes year to year and the donor car's may not match yours . If the starter engages and it just cranks over, you need to check for spark first and fuel pressure second.
