The automatic wipers are driving me crazy. They're really inconsistent in drizzle and I find myself having to turn them on/off manually. I'd rather just use good old fashioned intermittent...

Has any one out there disconnected theirs successfully? If so, how did you do it?

You really don't need to disconnect them do you?? Just turn the switch all the way back, and it will turn them off....That is what I do when I go through a car wash. If you want the good ol' intermittent, well, I think you are out of luck. (Unless you want a lot of work) But, if you want to turn them on steady, slow or fast, just roll the switch all the way forward.

When I first got my '02 TB LTZ 4x4 - those automatic wipers drove me nuts! I understand what you mean... However, after taking some time to adjust the sensitivity I am happy with them.

(use your wiper control dial - the selector like the old fashioned intermittent settings) Depending on the intensity of the rain, and your road speed, you will find a spot that controls the wipers pretty well. That is not to say that they won't take a random swipe across your windshield, or leave you waiting to clear some rain drops.

If I am ever left with a windshield full of drops, and the rain sensor has not responded yet, I just turn the dial one notch, which causes the wipers to activate for a swipe or two. Also... I have switched to the Rain-X brand of windshield wiper fluid, with good ole Rain-X built right in....

Additionally, I just had the factory recall for the wiper control module taken care of. I am now waiting to drive in a heavy rain to see if that problem was corrected. (erratic wiper movement, jumping all over the windshield, jerking motion, stopping at times)

That's basically what I'm doing. Maybe I just need to chill out a little. I love new technology but this is one case where it's only 1/2 baked. Good idea to use the Rain-X though. I'll have to try that.

I figure that there must be a way to just bypass the sensor and use the intermittent relay. It seems like the sensor is controlling electric flow to the standard relay and if the connection were closed all the time the wipers would work like normal... That’s just my theory.

It is actually very simple to revert to the standard intermittent wipers. I did this at first because I felt the same way about the automatic wipers, but went back to automatic control and stayed there after getting used to it. These wipers will even go to the highest speed automatically if the rain is very heavy. The rain sensor is the black circular device on the windshield behind the inside rear view mirror. With the vehicle shut off, disconnect the wire that is connected to the rain sensor. The wipers will work as standard intermittent wipers with five time settings as set on the wiper stalk.
