Brake Pad Life?

I've got a 94 Rodeo. I purchased it in 98 and it's still running great. I discovered a dull grinding noise from the rear brakes. A buddy of mine and I pulled the rear tires off and found the break pads were gone. We turned the disks, put new pads on them and I was good to go.

But now I'm wondering if my front pads are due for a change. Do front pads last significantly longer than rear pads or should I expect I will need to change them soon as well?

I am working on the assumption that the pads were replaced in 1998 and I've put about 55-60k miles on them in the mean time.

I would check your front brake pads ASAP. The front brakes do more work than the rear ones do, so they don't last as long.

The front pads could be fine, it's easy to take a look and see how much surface you have left on them.

Isuzu OEM pads last a LONG time. I've heard of them going close to 100K miles. The OEM's are ceramic.

My 98 has 100k and I am just now getting ready to change the originals. This is the first vehicle I have ever known to last that long. Definetly go with the OEM.

Thanks for the info. It's appreciated. I'll check them out sometime this week.

I let the back disks grind for about 4 days and I just barely had enough metal left to turn the disk. Thankfully, I got the rear's turned for 7 bucks and the pads were about 16. So I think I lucked out on the costs.

No excuse not to do the same for the fronts.

Re: Brake Pad Life?

When i got my truck with 76k kms on it the dealership did the brakes. They used cheap crap aftermarket brakes though and 10k kms later the rotors are glazed, and the pads make horrible clicking noises and theres nothing I can do but replace it all with good parts.

I went to an autozone and they had 2 pads available. One was 13 dollars the other was 16 dollars. I went with the 16 dollar ones....hopefully they last.

Re: Brake Pad Life?

Pep Boys has ceramics. Ray Bestos for $50 something, and their brand for $30 something. That's for either the front or the back.
