Accelerator Problem on a 98

Evening

I have a 98 Rodeo with 80k on it and for about a week, I've been having a problem with the accelerator. It started out as random, but now is a full-time thing.

I start the truck up and let it sit for a minute to warm up and as soon as I head out on the road, I barely touch the pedal and the engine wants to kick up to about 2k RPM and stay there. It doesn't do anything while I'm driving, but when it's time to stop the engine wants to stay up at 2k. Needless to say, it becomes a pain to bring the truck to a stop and the transmission jerks as it tries to shift back down to second and first because of the higher RPMs.

Any thoughts?

If it is not that, it could be something with the powersteering pump. There is a switch in the pump, that when it gets dirty is stuck open. I think the switch is suppose to turn on when you have the steering wheel cranked in one direction. With the switch on it raises the idel speed a bit (but up to 2000 seems a bit much).

Also, I know the 98-99 has a cable run accelerator (00-on have drive by wire). On the 93-97 it has the same thing, but over time there is a rubber dust cover boot on it there breaks down and can get caught causing a high idle. I'm not sure if the 98-99 has the same set up?
Check it out.

I had the same problem just a week ago, I removed the dust cover, put a little 3-in-1 oil on the throttle cable and haven't had a problem with acceleration since!

Thanks for the tip! Probably saved me a ton of cash had I took it to a shop.
