fixing paint

I'm looking for some advice on DIY paint repair. As I posted in an earlier reply, the body shop says that I have about $700 in repairs to my vehicle, and I'm wondering how much of this I can do myself with little risk of making things worse. 1) There are some scratches to the clear coat which I'm sure I can buffer out. What steps do I take? I have an electric buffer, some finishing compound (3m Finish It II), and some glazing compound (also says swirl remover on the bottle). 2) There are two shallow pings - both disappear if you cover them with your finger tip. Is there a pratical way to handle those or should I just go have someone fix them? 3) For the scratches through the clear coat, what's the best way to proceed? Again, maybe I'm better off hiring it done. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: fixing paint

Well, if you cant feel the scratches then you can buff them out and I would do it yourself if you know how....as for the dings get some Kombi Putty, spraypaint, and clear here: www.paintworldinc.com or by calling 1-800-548-4321..... all materials together might run you about $30 - $40.....and it will take you about 4 hours to do the job but most of the time is spent waiting for the coats to dry. Actual work is probably 1 hour. Just call that number and have your color code handy and they will take good care of you.

Re: fixing paint

If the "pings" don't have paint damage, check out one of those paintless dent repair placed. They can perform miracles.
Given the choice, I'd rather that than fill/paint.
