more power for 89 camaro

what is the best way to get a little more power without making a huge change(nitrous turbo etc.) i found a chip that claims it will provide 20 mor horse and 36lbs of torque and dissable the governor. I was wondering if any of you guys know any other tricks on how to get more power.

for the GM OBD I cars, there is no chip out there that can give you that much gain alone. You should use chips to tune out your setup. Not to increase HP.

Re: more power for 89 camaro

cheapest way to get a good boost of power is to get a set of junkyard vortec heads, and a SDPC tpi vortec baseplate, back to back dyno tests have shown 50hp increases at the flywheel. and thats with unmodified heads. take the time and money to have them ported and polished and setup for a larger cam, and sense youve got the intake and heads off anyway, do the extra work and throw a cam in it, and youll be off to the races with well over 300hp and have spent less than a grand. and depending on the size of the cam you get, you might even get better gas mileage.

Doesnt the SDPC base plate cost a nut and a half??

Re: more power for 89 camaro

baseplate is somewhere between 300 and 400 bucks. but if ya get a pair of junkyard heads the combination isnt very expencive, and it does wonders for hp.

I dunno i would get heads polished and ports polished as well as get a Crane Cam and that should give you a good 100 horse for about 800-900
bucks

Re: more power for 89 camaro

the factory heads????? i wouldnt waist the money on em, for less than the price of a port and polish job, you could get a set of junkyard vortec heads which would still flow more air. then spend a bit more and get the baseplate. the port and polish job might be worth 20hp, the heads and baseplate are worth more than twice that, and if you spend the money on the cam, you would see even more hp from the vortec combo than the ported factory heads.

I dunno ive just seen couple ppl get walked over with thos heads. And that you have to use the stock vortec intake manifold and the valves are pritty weak in them, but on the other hand they can hold a good 420hp id say. I dunno me personally would use holley becuase of the thick valves that work better under higher rpm's. Everyone has thier own opinion. lol my hole trucks pritty much holley.

Re: more power for 89 camaro

well the thing about the valves, is that they arent limited by the heads, you can easily run 2.02/1.60 valves in them, so long as you get the 062 castings, the limiting factor here is his 305. the 350 runs a 4.00in bore, the 305 runs a 3.736in bore, that the 2.02/1.60 valves wont fit into.

and its not just me that likes those vortec heads, i have yet to see a magazine engine build up using vortec heads that didnt top 400hp with less than 10:1 compression and pretty mild cams. the airflow out of the box is already above the lower level bowtie heads, so their stats speak for themselves. oh and you dont use a factory vortec baseplate, SDPC specificly designed the baseplate to work on vortec heads, the intake ports are matched, it has increased volume in the runners to compliment the higher airflow. The intake ports on the vortec heads are so much bigger than the factory heads, the baseplate from the stock setup cannot even be modified to fit, because the ports of the vortec heads actually are higher than the edge of the baseplate lip, so you would have a quarter inch opening in the port to the head.

Pewter'01SS Has more negative feedback than positive
Vortec heads are the way to go. The runners have a rounder short turn, which means the air flows in a straighter path. The entire runner is a nice sweeping radius so the air doesn't have alot of restriction. The chambers disperse the combustion over the whole area of the piston. Basically, they kick ass. Plus they are abundant enough to be cheap. I just scored a used set for $140 a couple months ago. I'm going to mildly port them, have them machined for a larger cam and I'll have an awesome set of heads for around $200. Gotta love it.

Re: more power for 89 camaro

not a bad score pewter'01SS, i got my vortecs as a package deal, still bolted to the complete R code 350 they came with out of a 99 tahoe, 100 dollar core charge for the whole thing had everything from the oil pan to the valve covers, no intake though. have to love working at the dealership
