Question 97 Ford Taurus GL - Transmission Problem

Alright, I will driving my car and everything seems fine. I come to a stop light and i wait. When the light turns green, it seems as the transmission remains in the idle position. Pressing on the accelerator doesn't seem to help it kick over, but it will get into position within 2-10 seconds. At that point, I am back traveling normally 'til the next light. I tried diffrent gears and it has practically the same effect in reverse and overdrive, there seems to be less hassle in drive though.

I had the transmission flushed after being warned that the fluid was being burned. This was new to me, but it burgandy in color and had what looked like burned residue. My father said that i probably didnt need it, but it wouldnt hurt. That was about 2,000 miles/6 weeks ago. I also checked the fluid (while running, of course) and it had enough transaxle fluid.

'97 Taurus GL
~105k miles

I am at a loss.... just tell me it isnt a rebuild.

Have you ever changed the tranny filter? All the fluid the tranny uses runs through the filter. If its clogged, it will not shift correctly. Give that a try.

Re: 97 Ford Taurus GL - Transmission Problem

i took it to a shop and they drove it around the lot. They claimed the transmission bit it. They described it as "slipping" and its causing a lot of fluid to burn up. So with that, they say its going to blow up (not literally.)

If what you say is true it could save me alot of money. Thank you for the input.

Spend the $$ and replace the filter and fluid before you chunk out the big bucks.

Re: 97 Ford Taurus GL - Transmission Problem

You need a transmission rebuild/overhaul. It isn't the filter. You are shifting but you are slipping. Don't waste anymore money on Flush's or filters. This is very common at 100K. Let us know what you did and has happened please.
