96 S-10 coolant leak...

I got a Chevy '96 S-10 Pickup (56,000 miles). 3 times I have had and engine coolant leak. Not just a trickle, but it pours out and is completely gone after about a half hour. I have taken it to a Chevy dealership twice now to fix the problem, apparently no luck. The fix works for about 6 months and happens again. The leak seems to be coming from the front of the engine around the fan somewhere

I admit, I'm not a car guy, so I'm kinda lost on what to do now, especially since a Chevy dealership can't seem to fix it right.

1.) Can I drive the S-10 about a 1 1/2 miles to the dealership again, with no coolant? Or should I fill it up with Dex Cool just long enough to get me there?

2.) Is this a common problem with S-10's ore something?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

DO NOT DRIVE IT!!!!

For what it costs in coolant, put it in before you go.

i can think of 2 places where it can be leaking. the radiator or the water pump. this is assuming you looked under the engine compartment and checked the hoses for damage. which i highly doubt the dealer missed that. i have also seen 4.3L leak from the block plugs. i am guessing this is a 4.3L?

Maybe you should just check the plug. I know it's simple, but I mean the plug could be stripped from over tightening. My 89 had this problem, so we just drained it and completely sealed the plug area up... We don't plan to flush out the radiator anytime soon now.

Leak that bad should be easy to spot and fix right the first time. Take it to another mechanic if you can find one that is recommended. The dealer service guys flat rate at about 75 bucks an hour, don't have or can't take the time to really dig into a problem. Still, this should be a no-brainer for any decent mechanic.
