ok my pattern for shifting is as follows,

1st-2nd-3rd-2nd-3rd-4th-3rd-4th-5th

am i doing it right im not sure but it seems to work sometimes.

let me know what shifting patterns should be the best for my 93 civic dx HB

as CivicSpoon said to you before... "granny shifting is feathering the clutch, much like you'd do when you're just driving normaly. But the 1st-2nd-3rd-2nd-3rd-etc thing is a nice way to over rev your motor unless you're hitting corners doing autocross (SCCA type thing). In a straight line you never want to downshift when accelerating or your rpms will be far too high in the lower gear. Check out some of the videos online of kids doing that, there's one specifically where the kid downshifts and blows a hole in his tranny as soon as he lets out the clutch.

your shifting pattern should be specific for each "race" that you enter in, and if your car is a Civic DX, im pretty sure your not racing Vin Diesel in a white RX-7, so maybe you should go to a racing school and they could give you some tips, but everybody has there own driving style.

Where did you hear that you should shift down in that pattern? What kind of "race" are you engaging in? Why wouldnt you shift close to redline? and then never downshift and keep shifting up?

Why would you shift like that in the first place?

you wouldn't shift like that, at least no one intelligent would. And you'll kill you engine (at least your tranny) doing that. the only reason to ever do that is if you need to downshift in a corner. So when you have to slow down a little you're still in the powerband in the lower gear.
I never saw this thread before, but I find it funny that he said he didn't just watch the F&F in this thread but said this in the other thread: "actualy its been on my mind ever since vin diesel said it in F&F to paul walker." But oh well I'm sure the month or less that it's been, he's figured out not to listen to stupid lame ass movies to get his info...or else he blew his shit up.

yeah in a straight line always shift 1-2-3-4-5, never change that.
But with autocross it's different. Here's a really bad example; but if you play any kind of video game like Grand Turismo or N4S underground and you're using the manual tranny then you'll see what you need to do. When you take a sharp corner, you have to slow down and usually down shift so you have enough power to make it out of the turn. Other wise you'll be in too high of a gear to get teh car moving. But still the pattern of 1st-2nd-3rd-2nd-3rd-4th-3rd-4th-5th would never really work unless you happened to be running on a track that had gradually less sharpness in each corner as you went along, and didn't have long enough straight aways to have to shift up 2 gears.

this thread still amuses me...

Alot of the time I completely skip 3 and 4th, and sometimes 2nd also in daily driving. Just redline it in first and shift to 5th if the speed limit is 45-55.

shifting 1-2-3-4-5 is the easiest and fastest way to drag or street race anyone. period. because you get the most HP out of ur higher rpms. If you go from 3rd down to 2nd, you lose HP so you kind of get a jump but when you shift back up to 3rd, ur just back to where you started you lose more time that way than just going straight down. if you were driving normally on the street in maybe 3rd gear thats about 50-55 mph in about 4k rpm(in an integra) and you wanted to race someone who just pulled up next to you or drove by you then you can jump down to 2nd to get a quicker jump(as long as your RPM isnt too high to downshift) then go back up to 3rd it works for me i wouldnt recommend it i dont do it very often but in a general idea just never down shift in a straight race like drga or street
