head gasketxavier3jr 10-07-2004, 08:30 PM goddamn it my head gasket blew....sob neone know about how much thase things cost never bought one before haha 1stGenRocks 10-07-2004, 09:32 PM not sure about the 4g63 but usually for 4 cyls they cost about 80 bucks for the gasket. install is another story since you have to take so much stuff off. if you do it yourself its cheaper. but you still need to buy gaskets for everything else you disconnect to do the headgasket. 97_3clipse 10-07-2004, 09:32 PM sorry to break it to ya ,but the fairly decent ones run about $100 1stGenRocks 10-07-2004, 09:33 PM depends on whether you can get them at cost from working at a garage  george536 10-08-2004, 03:03 AM damn i called a shop and they want 600 to replace one. :eek2: joemathews 10-08-2004, 03:11 AM Yea about $500 of that is labor. A lot of shit goes into a HG job, especially when working in the tight quarters Mitsubishi was kind enough to give us near the timing belt area :D. You can pick up a head gasket and ARP head studs for about $150-170, and the head studs will serve you well up to like 30 psi. I remember reading a thread on Tuners associated with ARP head studs and crankwalk...let me see if I can find it. joemathews 10-08-2004, 03:19 AM http://www.dsmtuner.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8817 Some observations/hypotheses by a pretty fast DSMer who knows wtf he's talking about! He does, however, stress that none of this is proven, so don't take it as the word of God. kjewer1 10-08-2004, 12:16 PM A stock HG is prefered by many many poeple up to 30 psi boost. To use a metal gasket you have to have a finish grain specific to that type of gasket or it doesnt work. Stock gasket is soft and will conform. If you are builing up a motor from scrath its easy to have the head and block resurfaced for use with the metal gaskets though. I have had great luck with the ralliart Mitsu MLS gasket (Multi Layer Steel). The problem with a HG swap is you really should to the tbelt and water pump parts job at the same time, since you have to go through it all anyway. If you know those parts are low mileage and its not worth redoing it all, you can do a HG swap WITHOUT disturbing the timing belt. You use the stock tensioner tool to put slack in the tebelt (and to keep the tensioner from expanding). Ziptie the belt to the cam gears, and remove the gears from the cams. They can only go on one way (dowel pins) so there is no chance for errror. Keep the belt tied to the hood so it doesnt slip on the crank pulley. With this method, I could do a HG swap on my car in 2 hours. But there are risks involved, and its important to understand them all before tying methods like these. For the average guy though, all the tbelt stuff most likely needs to be replaced anyway... The 2gNT cars are a little easier since the tbelt job isnt bad, and there isnt as much BS to get out of the way. Never done one myself, but my brother does them on his lunch break... :D xavier3jr 10-08-2004, 02:14 PM ok it was just the seal (thank god) i went and baught one today it was like 26 bucks neways now here comes the questions how hte hell do i change it joemathews 10-08-2004, 03:44 PM ok it was just the seal (thank god) i went and baught one today it was like 26 bucks neways now here comes the questions how hte hell do i change it It was just what seal...? george536 10-08-2004, 05:37 PM you mean the valve cover gasket? xavier3jr 10-08-2004, 05:45 PM ye sorry my dad looked at it and said head gasket....so i took everything off and found out the head cover was fine......so now im workin on putin it all back together haha but yea it was the valve cover.....(who wonts to help me murder my dad???) joemathews 10-08-2004, 08:04 PM LMAO. Please don't tell me you pulled the head and it was a valve cover gasket!? Anyway, what's done is done, and you can still take pride in murdering your Dad (yes, I will help, just let me know where I can send the "package" *wink, wink*). Valve cover gasket is easy, just make sure not to tighten the bolts down too much. A half turn to snug them up is all you need! BoostedSpyder 10-08-2004, 09:28 PM ya it's pretty easy to strip and crack bolts on the VC... xavier3jr 10-08-2004, 10:19 PM ill meet u in anderson and u can follow me to his house lol 2of9 10-08-2004, 10:59 PM man, i thought the HG was expensive for a 4g63 HG..is it? where i live to replace a head, any HG costs like 600+...why? i dunno, but good thing its just your valve cover...hahahah 1stGenRocks 10-09-2004, 11:33 AM silvergtr43: it usually cost 600+ for the head gasket and labor to install it. most of the people here were talking just the prices for the parts Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
