I have a 97 110K Always ran great. I've had the common ignition switch problem which cut the power to the dash. After replacing it worked fine. Know when the truck starts it idles and dies. Start it again and in runs and drives nice. It's not consistent, sometimes it dies but it is starting to happen more often. I'm thinking the fuel pump relay, can these work somtimes, and other times nothing?

thanks

Tune up time!

Plugs
Cap
Rotor
Spark Plug Wires
Air and Fuel filter

Chances are, your fuel filter is getting gooped up with crud that always finds it's way into our tanks. I had the same problem with mine when I first got it. Swapping out an $8 fuel filter cleared it right up. If the basic tune-up stuff does not nail it, post back... Good luck, be safe, have fun!

I did a tune up about 6 months ago and the filter was replaced this summer, when I first noticed the problem. It seems like the pump just cuts out. Is there the possibility that the relay is getting weak.

thanks

If the problem is intermittent, then I would suspect electrical troubles. Before you go swapping out a relay or a fuel pump, consult your repair manual (Haynes or Chilton's) to trace and tighten up harnesses and ground connections. Then use a fuel pressure gague plugged into the schrader valve to monitor fuel delivery pressure.

Usually, the help of a buddy can be enlisted to listen at the rear driver's side of the truck for the fuel pump. It will make a hum for a few seconds as it pressurizes the injection system, and then you will hear a click in the area around the glove-box when it reaches operating pressure, the pump going silent.

When you have that gague attached, look for 57~60 or so PSI *before* you crank the engine. If it is lower than that, it will not start. Which pretty much leads you back to checking grounds, harnesses and that relay again. Get is all checked out before you go swapping out the pump and/or relay though. We'll talk more later on how to test the relay itself if getting under the truck and wiggling wires does not cure the problem.

There are other things that may come to mind as to what may be wrong, espeically if the truck just "dies" when rolling down the road... Get back to us all when you have covered the basics, please. :)
