99 tacoma stock airbox questiontacoma man. 10-04-2004, 10:46 PM i was wanting to do the deckplate mod but my airbox has vertical lines running up and down it and there is no way to cut the hole in it and seal it off. or is there. ( someone enlighten me please ) Brian R. 10-05-2004, 01:26 AM You cut through the vertical ribs. You fasten the deckplate with screws in holes drilled between the ribs. Even if you drill into a rib, it will hold. You seal it on the smooth outside surface, not the inner ribbed surface. lifetrddeath 10-05-2004, 11:31 AM I know what youre saying, 'cuz I'm trying to do the same thing. Here's a quick pic I made of two different air boxes, a 4runner and a '00 (same as 99) tacoma. Notice the difference, and those damned ribs. Can you help Brian? I figure you can mount it on the side and use some sealant in conjunction with screws to make sure it holds. http://www.jmlsubstance.com/airboxes.gif corbinwaterski 10-06-2004, 09:47 AM I don't remember the name of the stuff, but you can get it at a body shop and/or glass shop. They use it to install windshields. It should seal up the around the ribs. Just a suggestion. bearcat329 10-06-2004, 08:18 PM had the same problem, went the simple route, used a hole saw, approx 2 1/2 inchs dia. cut 2 holes, 1 on the engine side of the airbox, and 1 on the back side of the airbof, not sealable as a deck plate mod, but will serve the intended ourpose, allow more air into the airbox, also removed the air intake tube from the box, to the inner fender well, hth, Rick, Ore Brian R. 10-07-2004, 02:22 AM Those ribs don't look too tall. Just use the sensor-safe sealant to make a bead thick enough to seal the deckplate. Let it dry for 12 hours before you use it. Sorry, I thought you were talking about a V6 airbox. corbinwaterski 10-08-2004, 01:14 PM Chromate. It is used for vacuum bagging composites while they cure. Perfect for air tight applications and for any temp. You can get it at any industrial supply company. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
