I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED (2) F-150's AN 87' WITH THE 302 4-SPEED MANUAL TRANS AND AN 88' WITH THE 300 STRAIGHT SIX 5-SPEED WITH THE INTENTION TO BUILD ONE GOOD TRUCK. IT WILL BE A DAILY DRIVER AND USED TO TOW A TRAILER WITH 2 ATV's BOTH ARE 4X4's
ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHICH MOTOR AND TRANS IS A BETTER COMBO??????????
BOTH HAVE AROUND 150,000 MILES ON THEM AND RUN PRETTY GOOD. NO SMOKE OR NOISES. THE 4-SPEED IN THE 302 JUMPS OUT OF THIRD GEAR AND THE 300 HAS LOW OIL PRESSURE (PROBABLY THE SENDING UNIT OR THE GAUGE)
I'M WONDERING ABOUT THE 302 WITH THE 5-SPEED TRANS????????
ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!

If I recall correctly, the 300 uses the BBf flywheel pattern, while the 5.0 uses the SBF, so the transmissions will not interchange.

The 300-6 is the better engine, and the 4 spd is the better trans (assuming it's NOT the 4 spd OD one).

not quiet, the 300 and the 302 have the same size flywheel and bellhouing. The 300 does have a different flywheel because it is an internally balenced flywheel. I would use the 300 for towing and daily driver anyhow. The 302 has not low end power and get poor gas milage. Worst come to worst have to get a different clutch, the 4 speed is probably one of those grannys, so i know they made that tranny with that motor coupled together stock.

I owned an 85 F15o 302 with an auto I hated It, I currently own an 87 F150 with a 300, 4spd OD combo I really love my 87, I'm not real sure about towing, but It don't hesitate when It's got a full load in the bed, I've hauled a 325 gallon water tank a few times, The engine is just as strong with that as it is with nothing, FYI 325 gallons of water is aprox. 2600 lbs.
