Yup - thats what the VR4 stands for. Not the catchiest phrase you'll ever hear, but it does make for a good trivia question.

Why the 4? is it for 4 wheel steering and 4 wheel drive? I'd kinda think it'd be 6 for 6 cylinders....
That's kind of a cool name though, but yeah not something you'd go walking around and saying "I drive a Vicious Real-Time 4" (I don't... just an example) or even better I drive a "Vicious Real-Time 4 Spyder" :p

i am pretty sure that the "viscous real time four" thing is just a best guess by a lot of people. from what i have heard, no body seems to REALLY know, not even some people at mitsu headquarters that were asked.

GTO stands for gran turismo omologato which is an italian term for grand turing and then some other word that i have no idea about. by extension of that, the GT stands for grans turismo or grand tourer.

i agree that the 3000 probably stands for 3000 ml

on a side note, SL stands for sport luxury, base stands for base lol, RT/TT stands for road and track twin turbo i believe (RT obviously stands for road and track if the previous is true) and for the ever so rare 3000 GT MR, the MR stands for mitsubishi racing (those things run like 12.5 sec 1/4 miles stock  )

i beleive its actually spelled(not trying to correct anyone cause my grammer sucks)

VISCOUS not viscious. though it would be cool for it to be called viscious realtime 4

VR4's come equipped with a viscous coupling differential

How does that work? I assume it's a good thing lol.

in a nutshell (someone correct me if i'm wrong anywhere) its just an awd differentail with two sets of plates (one set to each output shaft) and a "Viscous" liquid in between. when drivin normally the plates and viscous liquid spin at the same time but when one set starts to loose traction or slip the set of plates connected to the set loosing traction spins faster than the other and the viscous liquid in between spins faster and causes the other set of wheels to try to catch up resulting in more torque to the non slipping wheels and thats why they call it a viscous coupling differental :) . hope i said it clear enuff, kind of hard to explain. and ikOnone, i'm pretty sure it stands for Viscous Real time 4 for the differential type and 4 wheel drive

that works too, so is it definite that SL stands for Sport Luxury?

thank god... for a second i thought you were talking to me and i looked the damn word up, i would have to be a real dumbass to look it up and then spell it wrong lol.

knight - yea, i agree, it makes perfect sense but all i was saying is that i think this is not based on what it was acctually ment to mean but rather what a bunch of people guessed at because it made sense and no one really knew. if you do a search on 3si there are huge threads debating this. i think because so many people have heard that it does mean viscous real time four that it has morphed from speculation to fact via internet message boards.

Lol maybe true, gotta watch out for those anomous internet boards :).
