Jetta aircon cutting in and out

Dear All
I bought two years ago a second hand (I am the second driver) VW Jetta 111 (South Africa), 1992 model from a local VW dealer. The car has now 147 000 km on the clock. I never had any problems with the aircon (it came out with the car). Recently I noticed that the aircon is not cooling as it used to do. I took it to the VW dealer who refilled it with gas. Now when I push the aircon button on, the aircon "cuts" in and out as long as the aircon button is on - the VW dealer said I should check with an expert. Does anybody have a clue what could be wrong or what should I checked for - electronics, mechanical?

Thank you

Lightbulb

I don't know if this will apply to you but I have a similar problem with my 95 Jetta. What I have noticed are defective contacts on the fan speed selector switch. If the fan is off the a/c cuts out. I have yet to replair the switch (selections 2 and 4 work fine but 1 and 3 cut in and out) but if I tap the switch I notice the a/c will come back in. Hope this helps.
