Friend has a 00' celica. In the morning when he starts up the car, it would start the first time every time, however it would give off a cracking noise as he describes it. To get rid of the noise he would press the gas pedal and it'd go away. After that initial startup precedure, the car runs fine with no issues at all.

Also worth mentioning is that this only occurs with a cold start in the morning and does not happen during the day when he has to restart the car.

What could be the cause of this?
