Question Cold idle failing, sometimes

Hi All,

Our '96 Rav4 is having an intermittent problem with the cold idle. Sometimes it fails to keep the rpms up and will stall unless I keep the peddle down. Doesn't happen every time; about 1 in 4 starts. Only lasts for a brief period. Seems to idle ok after a minute or so. Runs fine when warm. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jon

A friend has a Rav4 that is exibiting the same symptoms. Did you ever get yours fixed. Was it the idle air sensor??

Im having the same problem with my 2000.

Re: Cold idle failing, sometimes

Dealer was unable to recreate or verify cause of problem at all as it does not post codes in computer. I replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the maf while troubleshooting. Fuel filter was quite dirty and may have been the cause but thats the best I have. It seems to be fixed but I cannot say exactly what fixed it. Been going almost a month in the cold with no symptoms though. Worth a try and the fuel filter could probably do with a change if you have more than 40K on it anyway.

Red face

I just went through this it's the idle speed control valve, check to see it's not dirty if it is clean it. The only problem is once you do that you might have to replace an IAT sensor or coolant sensor. Not expensive

Best of luck
