im haveing fuel problems

just got the car running the timeing was off and now it idles for alittle then dies and if i rev it it stops quicker wondering what fuel stuff i need to look for fuel pump carbs let me know thanks

Tune the carb/s and sync them if you have two and make sure there is oil in the dash pot

If this doesnt work you may want to consider a carb rebuild. I had the same problem right after getting my '73 running and thats what I had to do. Good luck.

how hard would a rebuild be on the su carbs and know anyone with a good kit. thanks.

Put a weber on the 73 I had .ran alot better. Got tired of working with the old twin carb set up.Ran a little faster too.

Sometimes the water choke fails making adjusting the carb a real pain in the neck! I put a manual choke on mine to stop the insanity. The car may have eaten the rubber diaphragm on the top of the carb. Tining that Stromberg Carb can be a beast.

i have dual su carbs and the fuel i think is the problem. it has an amber color and some people have said that gas in tank is bad bit i drained it already and the problem of the gas has continued wondering what a solution could be.

O.K. My wife just bought a 74 midget, with a gas tank full of lacquer. Lots of gum. Fuel pump was toast, float bowls on Carbs were full of gum too. I actually used compressed air to blow the fuel lines free to finally get gas to the carbs. (O.K. I lied my fuel line runs to a gas can right now. ) No, it is not a driver yet. This Spring..ha.ha.
If you havent swapped out the fuel filter, try that. I'm not sure on the MGB gas tank but the Midget tank '74 had a screen over the fuel pick up area that was gummy yours might be too. There are some products out there that will clean the tank. I just did a 67 Austin Sprite tank for a friend. Clean - Etch - Seal. Tank will last a long time now.

Amber colored gas could mean your tank is rusting on the inside. Your fuel filter may need replacing. Check the fuel bowls in the carbs, make sure there is no debri clogging anything. Sea Foam is a fuel system cleaner and a fuel stabilizer, available at marine supply stores.

When the engine stops can you hear the fuel pump running? If it is not clicking and is an SU pump try hittinh the pump with a screwdriver handle to see if it starts. If it does the fuel pump needs points replaced or adjusted. If you can hear it clicking, remove the fuel line with ignition off. Find a quart size container and turn on the ignition to see how much fuel pumps in appriximately 30 secomds. It should pump about a pint in 30 seconds. If fuel delivery is ok you may have carburetor problems, probebly float needle valves are sticking in the closed position. I assume you have SU HIF4 carbs, you can hook a short peice of hose to the carb fuel inlet and blow into the hose, lift the piston and note if fuel runs out of the jets. If no fuel comes out of the jets you need to look inside the float chambers, for the HIF carb you have to remove the carbs to check the float chambers. If you find Grose Jet float valves in the carbs I suggest replacing them with the correct SU float valves. You can replace the float valves without rebuilding the carbs, there is an o-ring for the float chamber cover that can be reused. Get your fuel delivery correct before deciding if the carbs need rebuilding.

thank you for that info. i cleaned the carbs awhile ago. im going to try the fuel flow. the fuel flows constanly i can hear the pump when it does die. i will try your test though. thanks again
