1999 Sierra Z71- "Service 4 wheel drive" lightCrowsfox 09-20-2004, 05:58 PM The light recently started coming on in my truck. I read what limited information was available in the owners manual. Could anyone tell me exactly what I need to do, step by step? The manual states that I need to add a lubricant to my transfer case? If you have any ideas on this I would appreciate it.. I know this can be taken care of rather quickly and dont feel like giving the dealership a mass amount of money for nothing lol.... thank you.... Dmires 09-24-2004, 12:18 AM When mine started to come on I took the switch, (auto, 2hi, 4hi, 4lo) on the left side of the steering wheel, apart and resoldered the connections. They solder joints become cold and don't make good contact. The switch was around 70 bucks from the dealer. My understanding is if you let the dealer change it they will charge around $200. Good luck c3vet 10-01-2004, 02:09 PM Dmires, is correct, I used to work at a GM dealership and that the correction, replace switch( cause thats how we made money) but, yes loose connection in switch. GMCTech 10-04-2004, 06:19 AM Most likely it is the switch - (95%) of the time. But you should have the codes read to make sure. There are a couple other concerns if there are other codes. Have the codes read first, before you drop the $40 on a new switch. Hope this helps. sudsy49 10-07-2004, 09:31 AM thanks for the info, this light is driving me crazy! Sonny01 10-09-2004, 08:33 PM The solder joints crack around the pins and just need to be reheated. You can add some solder to make it stronger if you want. The hard part is getting the back of the switch off. jpschier 10-30-2004, 08:29 PM could a defective switch also cause some transmission trouble? My service 4wd light comes on now and then, but today my transmission started to make a grinding noise and felt like it was slipping for a few minutes then seemed to go back to normal. I got the truck home, and later tried to drive it and I could shift it into reverse, but it wouldn't move. It's not making any noise when I shift into reverse. Forward gears work normal. Fluid level is good. sudsy49 11-01-2004, 09:27 AM hey jp, i dont think the 4wd switch will cause your tranny to mess up, but i bet the push button switch is causing the 4wd service light to come on occasionally. i took mine out and opened it up and about six pin solder joints were cracked. I work at computer company and had a tech resolder them for me and its been fine since. The reverse problem should be checked out at a good transmission shop. Good Luck!
