1993 Jeep Cherokee No Start

I have a 1993 Jeep Cherokee, 2WD, which will not start.

When I turn the key, I hear the fuel pump kick in, I get all the bells and buzzers, but no crank.

One thing is I drive it only 7 minutes to work, so it hardly even has the time to come up to standard operating temp before it gets shut down; the Batt guage indicates 12 when I turn the key on. I havent lost the radio presets so I know the battery is good...

Does everything dim when you try to start? What does the gage read when you try to crank? Have you tried a jumpt start?

You should also hear a fairly loud click from within the engine compartment. This is the starter solenoid kicking in. If you don't hear anything like that (have a friend turn the key while you listen), then the solenoid is most likely bad.

Yeah, I have. I hear all the relays clicking in. I just cleaned the BATT posts and retried it - nothing. I jiggled the starter relay (who knows when/if those go bad), and I got 3 successful starts. I'm going to change the starter relay out and see what happens.

Check your ignition sw. down on the steering column. See if you can start it when you move the shift lever with the ignition key in the start position. Move it from park to neutral, jiggleing it back and forth. There's a chance it could be you Neutral safely sw.

I have a similar chronic problem with my '94 Cherokee. About 1/4 of the time it won't start. Don't laugh, but the totally ridiculous thing I've come up with is to turn the ignition to start position and move the shifter from P to N back to P, to N and back to P, and then back to N (like a 3rd times a charm sort of thing) and then turn the ignition back to off and then turn to key to start the car. My car starts 100% of the time when I do this.

Bob, what exactly is the "Neutral Safety sw"? that sounds like it might be related to my voodoo solution.

If you try to start and sometimes nothing happens - and when you jiggle on the shifter it starts - it is most likely nuetral safety switch (NSS). Another problem you may see with this is that your backup lights don't work either. Try this link and it could save you a ton of money ($300).

It takes you thru step by step the process of cleaning your NSS - I fixed mine about 8 months ago and acts like brand new and the back up lights work now too.

I hope this helps - Good Luck!

Thanks for your response. Someone else also sent me the same information. I guess that both of you can't be wrong.

Thanks
