Question '85 cherokee pioneer/4x4 indicator light stays on...

My brother just purchased, says the 4x4 light is engaged. He is going to test driving conditions today, when he engages 4x4 himself. The guy who sold it to him gave him an extra relay? and said "this is good." Could it be the relay? how hard is that to replace? Or why would the 4x4 light come on? Thanks a bunch!

Not sure about the relay, doesn't this model have a vacuum operated front axle? If so, it sounds like the axle may still be engaged, to check this turn the wheel all the way to the right, then SLOWLY move forward. If the axle is still engaged, you should feel the axle bind up. Let me know what happens. Theres more to this, but I need to know what make up the front axle is.
