98 Grand Prix Se wont' start, please help!!!

Hi,

I just bought this car, I drove it home from the sellers palce and it drove awesome, the next time I started it was 2 days later for some reason it took like 2 turns of the ignition to get it started which I found a bit odd. Anyways after that day it hadn't been started till now which has been about 4 days later, now the car wont' start at all!!! I tried measuring the battery with an analog multimeter but it was fairly hard to read, I think it was around 12 V though...the alternator in the car is fairly new anyways. I tried boosting the car but it still won't turn over!! All the power stuff works like lights, locks, stereo, ect but when you turn the ignition the fuel pump comes on, and then when you go to turn the ignition again to try and start the car it just makes like a slow clicking start and goes, errr, errr, errr, and then stops making the err sound, if you keep trying to turn the ignition to try and start it you get a few clicking sounds. I thought maybe it was the starter but it's making a sound, I'm sort of upset cause I just bought the car and the car was running great on the way home when I bought it. I did some reasearch on car batteries and found out that a discharged battery can read a high voltage but not have enough Amps (current) to turn over the engine!!

Is there anyway easy ways for me to check the starter or other things I should look for, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

It definately sounds like a battery problem. I would think a jump start should work. Hook it up and let the car with the good battery run for a while before you try to start the dead one. If it still wont start I would suspect loose or corroded battery cables.

Have the battery checked at a store like autozone, it doesn't cost anything and if it is the battery then you've solved your problem. If that doesn't work maybe get hold of the place you bought it from and see if they had any problems with the car. Check for lose terminals or corrosion, and you still can't rule out a starter. A failing starter solenoid can start freezing up and a car battery may not have the amperage to free it up.

You've either got a bad battery or a starter dragging. Take 86's advice and go to Zone or Advance. They will test your battery and eliminate that as a cause. If the battery is good, then you need a starter.

I have seen brand new batterys fail to start a car due to a + cable being corroded at the terminal.

I'd check both cables. Ground is normally the side that goes first. Make sure there clean and tight, at both ends.
Batteries down here last about 2 years. The heat kills them. Had a Selville that I pulled in the drive. Went out 5 mins. later and it was dead. Load test battery.
