front end shake

I have a 98 328I and the past few weeks it has developed an intermittent front end shake. I can be driving on the highway and the steering wheel will start to vibrate. it will continue to get worse, sometimes it will vibrate back and forth almost an inch, and then will slowly go away and be fine for the rest of the drive.

Yesterday it got worse and I even pulled over to check the lug nuts and make sure nothing was falling off. I got it home, but now I have to decide if I can fix it or if I have to take it to the shop.

I had pretty bad rotor vibrations and I have recently replaced all 4 rotors and pads, so I don't think it is a brake issue.

thanks for any advice.

Mike

Check your ball joints, I am having very similar symtoms in my '99 and I have about an 1/8" play on both sides.

Check out E46fanatics forum for alot of talk about front suspension bushings and front control arm (wishbone). Possibly need new control arms and chasis bushings - $350 in parts, plus alignment or close to $1,000 by dealer.

I have the same car and had the same problem... The Ball Joint drivers side under the front strut at the control arm was blown and my strut bearing/mount was bad also. I replaced both of them and all is good now. :2cents:
