If I'm reading the import restrictions correctly; a bare chassis is not considered a working auto, and thus are not restricted to entering the country. Is this correct?

I'm looking at having a R32 chassis (No engine, trans, etc.) brought down from canada. I shoudn't catch any flack at the border? As long as it is not reassembled here in the US, it is not considered illegal to possess.

Well, I did some more reading. The docs say that a motor vehicle is still subject to laws, even w/o it's engine..which I kinda felt wasn't 100% clear either. They don't have a problem with *bodies*, but the chassis is a problem. Engine/Trans by themselves, no sweat it seems, but the chassis may be the bulk of what they consider "A car".

If you did purchase a chassis, and brought it over the border/into the US, you will still be subject to getting it federalized. Well, in this case the chassis would eventually be destroyed I suppose, as it's being cut up. All I wanted to make sure was I wasn't going to get a large hulk of steel impounded when I cross back over into the US from Canada. I'd have the japanese "title" and bill of sale...

I don't think it will be a problem, but I wanted to check first.

Oh, and the chassis in question is a R32 if anyone wondered. A nothing-special car, it's for donor use to repair sheetmetal on an existing car with. Not like I can troll a local boneyard for repair parts
