Robert Bentley Publishing is a great company! No, I don't work for 'em, but I've trusted their books for a while. They've written the best VW repair manuals I've used... They actually author the VW dealer's repair manuals, if that gives you some idea of their reputation.

They didn't write this one--it's from BMW (as told above).

I ordered mine on Friday (July 29 2004), and as of today I don't have it in my hands yet--but when I do I'll give you my humble take on its' thoroughness and quality.

Robert Bentley's website was actin' funky on Friday, so I had to order by phone. They've got a toll-free number 1-800-423-4595

Hey all!

The manual is great, but I've encountered ONE little problem, which I thought I'd pass on:

If your computer has a lot of RAM (mine has 1GB) this program will not run. Instead, you'll get a nifty little error message which reads:

Run-Time Error: '2004':

Out of memory.

Grrrr...

The program uses an older version of MicroSloth Visual Basic for Applications which seems to be prone to this problem. None of Billy G's patches did me any good at all.

In order to get it to run, I had to open up the case and remove one of my two 512MB DIMMS.

This seemed worth mentioning, since many newer computers come stock with 1GB or more...

If you've got one of those smokin' Dell XPS machines, or some hopped up gaming box--for example, you may want to think twice!

I'm still seeking an appropriate patch, fix etc. and if anyone has any ideas, feel free to reply!

Per my above posts... With the gracious assistance of some fine folks at the Dell Community Forum pages, the SETI@Home "Help Desk" forum page, the Microsoft Solutions Community Forum and others, I've developed a work-around for the memory errors listed above, by rewriting my startup script. Nobody "professional" was ever able to come up with a solution, but the helpful fellow users at the locations above helped me find one! Now when booting up my machine I have the option to limit my memory to 512 -- or not -- depending on whether or not I need to use the BMW software. I simply reboot and select the full-memory option to restore my computer to its full potential when I'm done using the manual. If you have more than 512MB of RAM in your computer and you need details of this workaround, let me know.

FYI: When I mentioned the problems I had been having to the BMW Tradition folks -- who wrote this software -- they offered no solution to this problem either. :( I would not expect any technical support from them.

Also, Re- the manual, the troubleshooting information as well as many of the specifications are only available in German. This may prove to be a slight handicap for the non bilingual user (like myself).

The pictures are good though, and while it's not the easiest product in the world to navigate, I've blundered my way through pretty well.

The best use I have made of it is for removal and/or installation of components on my 633CSi.

There is no simple IPB (illustrated parts breakdown) section --at least not that I've found yet...

Let me know how it works out for you! I'm not dissapointed with my purchase, but would have preferred a more user-friendly product, with more English language support. Let me know what you think!
