96 XL clunking when cold in 2wd ok in 4wdairjetmech 08-02-2004, 01:49 PM New to the forum and looking to solve a problem. I have a 96 Sport with a front end noise. When the truck is first driven after sitting 12 hours, there is a clunking noise similar to running over bridge expansion joints, while in 2wd. If I turn the switch to 4wd... it goes away. After about 5 miles or so I can switch it back to 2wd and drive forever with no problems. It has a 5 speed and putting the tranny in neutral has no effect, still have the clunking!! Thanks for the help. Roger justinp973 01-23-2005, 03:13 PM 95 XLT Control Trac does the same thing. Clunking noise in 2x4 when cold but placing in 4x4 makes the clunk go away even when cold. Checked the front end and everything looks good. It must be the transfer case since it goes away in 4x4. I don't notice this problem when the vehicle is warmed up, only when first driving it and things are cool. This vehicle has the problem with old and new tires (new tires from Les Schwab). justin.phipps@comcast.net Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
