Torque converter solenoid unplugged....bsr500 08-01-2004, 01:30 PM I have a 1994 2.2L 4cyl automatic cavalier and the torque converter solenoid went up (after 15 minutes of driving it will start stalling when put into Drive/gear), So I unplugged the torque converter solenoid and it's back to normal. The car has close to 160,000 miles on it and I don't want to dump anymore cash/time into it. Is it "safe" to leave it unplugged? -Jayson- 08-01-2004, 02:12 PM i dont know but i had the same problem on my 95 2.2L auto. Cost me like 800 bucks to fix. . . if that is safe to unplug it and drive damn am i pissed. . . GTP Dad 08-01-2004, 04:39 PM Your gas mileage will suffer somewhat but it is safe to run it this way. public 08-01-2004, 04:44 PM I have a 94 with 175,000 that has been unplugged for a couple of years now. I have barely noticed the reduction in MPG. Good Luck. KJRich 08-02-2004, 09:25 PM It is fine to unplug it on the 3 speed autos (I've done it), but I've I heard its not good for the 4 speed autos. bsr500 08-06-2004, 02:04 PM any more replies from people that know alot about transmissions..... trannyman52 08-08-2004, 02:34 AM it is safe to drive that way but the gas mileage goes down the crapper!!! the solenoid can be replaced ,,,,just gotta find someone to do it that won't take you for a ride!!!! the part is less than $50.00 public 08-08-2004, 04:00 AM trannyman52 whats up ? The MPG difference is barely noticable. No car had a lock up torque converter before 1985 or so, and we did okay on our mileage. My 94 cavi went down less than 1 mpg and I drive on the highway where it would affect me the most. Mine has been unplugged for about 20k miles now. KJRich 08-08-2004, 09:17 PM I gotta agree, the mileage difference on the cars I did was barely noticeably. Maybe it depends on your style of driving. bdf24 08-12-2004, 05:43 AM My 93 cavalier has had it diconnected for around atleast 3 years now and I never realy noticed a difference in gas milage?
