1990 Stanza/dead tranny

A friend of mine owns a 1990 Stanza with auto trans. About a week ago the tranny died. I checked the car for him (he know's nothing about cars), and the tranny is dead. It will not shift to any gear and the car just idles/rev's in all the gears.
He took it to the Nissan dealer, and they said a new tranny will cost $1500. Now he just wants to sell it like it is. The engine is still in good condition. He has all the service receipts. The car's interior (seats) is great. And he is wondering much money he should ask.

Any suggestions?

I have a 1990 Stanza with auto and the engine is bad but trans is good. I am thinking about parting the car out. I could probably take $300 for it not including shipping.
