91 passat - replacing timing belt

I'm looking for any suggestions about replacing the timing belt in a 91 passat. My husband does all the work on our cars, but is admittingly nervous about this. We just bought the car from a used car dealer for $300 because he doesn't mess with VW's. We've heard different things about when the timing belt goes and the interference with the valves. Also, we'd like to know if there's anything else we should look at while he's got the engine apart.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: 91 passat - replacing timing belt

I'd replace the tensioner, oil seals & water pump while in there, depending on the miles. I suggest getting a Bentley manual.
