'86 635 Valve Adjustments

I have an 86 635 and my valves tick and i was wondering how i would adjust them to keep them from making so much noise. My friends told me to put lucas oil stabilizer in the car, so i did that but it only made the ticking slightly quieter. Does anoyone know how to adjust the valves and how hard it is to adjust them?

If you haven't adjust valves before, I recommend AGAINST practicing on your car, too loose won't hurt much, too TIGHT can cause a very rough idle & burnt valves!

It's not expensive to have properly done [by someone with BMW experience] and have them check the cam lobes for wear and the cam oiler banjo bolts for tightness..................................jb.

Doing a valve adjustment is relatively easy. You will need a valve cover gasket. You need to remove the spark plugs and you'll need a 32 mm socket to crank the engine. A stiff piece of wire (a coat hangar) will be need to adjust the rocker arm eccentric. Once you remove the valve cover, working from the front of the engine (at the fan) to the rear of the engine your begin by checking the valve clearance with a feeler guage. Do this by rotating the crankshaft using the 36 mm socket on the crankshaft (or vibration damper) nut so that the camshaft lobe is facing down. This is all best done with the engine cold (let it sit overnight). The proper gap is .012 in but .013 or .014 is OK as the wider the gap the better the engine will run - BUT NOT too wide. If the gap is not within spec you'll need to loosen the setscrew nut on the eccentric. do this for all the valves - 2 per cylinder. It is not rocket science and is relatively easy. I suggest you get the Bentley 5 series book which explains the process with some pictures. If you live in the Md area, I can show you how to do it.
