Is it possible to have the best of both worlds when it comes to turbocharging and supercharging your car? Instant power of a Supercharger and Peak power of a Turbo?
Could you run both on the same engine at the same time? Any thoughts/ideas on getting this to work?
I was thinking of using a Y type pipe instead of running them in a sequence.
In other words running them both through the intercooler without having anything to obstruct flow. I think if you were to run a SC into the turbo when it isn't spooled up that you would obstruct the flow. It might help spool the turbo but i think it would hurt more than it would help. Also just the added power from the SC down low in the RPMs would create a bigger flow of exhaust which would in turn help out in spooling the turbo.
This has been done and it fairly common among drag cars. Generally you put the turbos before the supercharger. You can't Y them together, the pressure the supercharger creates will just leave out the turbo, and since its flowing backwards through the compressor would pretty effectively stall the turbo out so it will never make boost. I've only seen it done on V8s, and I don't know what types of superchargers are available for 4cyl engines. What is done on the v8 drag motors is they'll put a roots blower on top:
The roots blower is the big ribbed box with the thick belt driving it on top of the motor. The turbo(s) feed into the top of this, where the carbs are on that motor. The reason this works so well is the roots blower is a positive displacement supercharger, meaning for 1 turn it always pushes the same ammount of air. So before the turbos are spooled, it sucks air through the turbos, compresses it, and feeds it to the motor. The increase in exhaust will quickly spool the turbos, which then increase the pressure between them and the supercharger. The supercharger then takes in a big gulp of the pressurized air, compresses it further, and feeds it to the motor. So if you're running a blower that gives you a 2:1 pressure ratio without the turbos(1 bar boost), and turbos that give you a 3:1 ratio(2 bars boost), you'll have a combination that'll potentially produce 5 bars of boost, or around 70psi. Not too shabby... you can probably do something similar on the street, but in order to gain any low end, you need to use a positive displacement supercharger, which basically means either a roots type or a screw type(aka whipple, lysholm type). The problem now becomes you may be producing too much pressure since its a sequential system. If set the supercharger up to run 6psi(1.4:1 pressure ratio) and wastegate your turbo at 6psi, you'll end up with a total pressure of around 14psi.
putting something like a turbo and a supercharger into a street racer blows the sport. that's more of a drag type thing, and i would be so mad if something with that in the motor pulled up beside me, wanting to race.
saying that, i don't think it's a bad idea for a drag sport, but not for the street.

it would be cheaper/easier to spray a small shot of nitrous to help spool the turbo. You could even have the nitrous hooked up to a window switch and/or pressure switch so that the nitrous would spray starting at a safe rpm, and shut off once you reach a certain rpm/certain boost. This of course would only be useful on a very large turbo because smaller turbos usually reach full boost at about 3,000 rpm on a honda anyways..
there is a toyota mr2 where they did a swap from the I4 to the camry v6 and then put a roots blower on top and a t78 turbo also on it. they ran it from texas to california and back or something on stock internals. aparently the blower helps spool the turbos and then the turbo actually puts hp back into the blower belt at high rpm. good for a drag car (if the governing bodies allowed turbos). not so good for a performance car.
why would you waist the money to do something like that I mean yeah it would be cool but the amount of tune time you would spend you be crazy you would have to set it up perfect. you would need to make the charger spool the turbo at just the right time and you would have to run the perfect boost combo dude, if ANYONE wants to try it I'm down to do it...
